Woodson Elementary School


Carter G. Woodson Elementary School is an urban school located in the Grove Park community of West Atlanta, two miles from downtown. It's part of the Atlanta Public School system. Woodson equips students to graduate from college and prepares them to become contributing citizens, international scholars, and catalysts of societal change. Of the students enrolled at Woodson, 98 percent are eligible for free or reduced lunches, which is an indication of low income.

  • Volunteer individually in one of their ongoing opportunities.
  • Donate some of their most-needed items.
  • Register to receive occasional updates on last-minute or one-time service opportunities or donation needs.

Individual Volunteer Opportunities
If you are interested in serving with Woodson Elementary, here are their ongoing volunteer options:
  • Reading to Kindergartners - Stop by on your way to work to read books to Kindergarten students from 8:15-8:35 am on weekdays. Children age pre-school or younger can accompany their parent. The volunteer opportunity is available any day Atlanta Public Schools are open.
  • Tutoring - Help during the after-school program or during the school day by tutoring a student. Tutoring opportunities are available between 8 and 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., or 3 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Mentoring a Student - Spending 1 hour a month can make a difference in a child's school performance. You can visit your student any time of the school day between 8 and 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., or 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Donations
If you are interested in donating some of Woodson Elemenatry's most-needed items, please consider dropping off the following or taking them with you as you go to serve. Currently, they need:
  • School supplies particularly kindergarten and first grade writing tablets and jumbo pencils
  • Books
  • Sweaters for the students
  • Underwear and socks for the students
  • White dress shirts for the students
